12 dead in Texas after truck hits church van head-on

Twelve people were killed and three others were injured Wednesday when a pickup truck slammed head-on into a van carrying 14 senior members of a Texas Hill Country church on a two-lane highway in southwestern Texas, authorities said.

"At approximately 2 pm this afternoon, a group of our senior adults were returning home from a 3-day retreat at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision.

"We have heard that there have been fatalities, but we have not received any official details from the local authorities.

"We are ministering to family members to help them deal with this tragedy. Counselors will be on hand at the church tomorrow. If you're a Christian, you can pray for those who lost their loved ones and for the church family," The First Baptist Church of New Braunfels said in a statement.

Governor Greg Abbott today released the following statement after a car crash involving multiple fatalities took place on Highway 83 North near Garner State Park:

“Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to the victims and the families of those involved in today's tragic event. We are saddened by the loss of life and our hearts go out to all those affected. We thank the first responders working on the scene in the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, and ask that all Texans join us in offering their thoughts and prayers.”
